Chiefs To Offer Goalkeeper New Deal?

Published

Kaizer Chiefs have made their interest known about offering one of their players an extended deal at Naturena, this according to Siya sources.

The Siya crew reported in July this year that unconfirmed reports revealed that Chiefs goalkeeper, Brilliant Khuzwayo’s contract at the club was set to come to an end next year, on June 30.

At the time it was also revealed that Amakhosi’s cross-city rivals, Orlando Pirates, were eyeing Khuzwayo and was looking to lure the player to the other side of Soweto, indicating that they were looking to make the 27-year-old their number one goalkeeper.

However, no move materialised for Khuzwayo at the time and the Buccaneers subsequently brought Wayne Sandilands on board.

Siya sources have since informed the crew that after the known interest in the player’s services, Amakhosi are looking to tie down the shot-stopper on a new deal, this before he reaches the final six months of his contract at Naturena.

Chiefs want to avoid losing the KwaZulu-Natal-born player on a free to one of their PSL rivals. According to Siya sources, the club has made their intentions known to the player and negotiations are expected to take place in the near future.

Remember When ‘Slow Poison’ Left Opposition Defenders Bamboozled?

Published

on

By

This week, Stangen takes a look at the late Lesley ‘Slow Poison’ Manyathela.

Manyathela was a goalscorer of note who left opposition defenders bamboozled every time he struck a ball into the back of the net.

The fact that Lesley Manyathela’s last bit of action inside a football pitch was a goal, in a Supa 8 game against Jomo Cosmos, on 8 August 2003, is a testament to the legacy he left behind – that of a goalscorer for whom scoring goals seemed more like a hobby.

On the 9th of August 2003, South Africa woke up to the shocking news of the demise of ‘Slow Poison’ – as he was fondly known. The humble striker from Musina in Limpopo who crept into football lovers’ hearts with his precision and composure in front of goal. He had been behind the wheel, en route to his hometown to be with his mother, just in time for Women’s Day, when he tragically passed away.

Manyathela helped Orlando Pirates clinch the league title in the 2002/03 season, scoring an incredible 48 goals in 73 appearances. In that campaign, he netted 22 times to win the Golden Boot award. The following season, following his passing, the award was renamed the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award, while Bucs retired jersey number 22 in his honour.

He earned five caps for the national U20 side, scoring one goal in the Cosafa Castle Cup. Naturally, he progressed through to the U23 team, where he scored six goals in 13 appearances. For Bafana Bafana, where the deadly striker was capped nine times, he scored four goals.

The real tragedy in Manyathela’s death is that, at 22, he was young and a lot had been expected of him. Even more saddening is that when he struck that goal against Cosmos, he had just come back from trials abroad and was said to have been on the verge of a move to Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev.

Those not privileged enough to watch him in action might ask: what separated the lanky marksman from the rest? He was a born striker, to start with, with a killer instinct in the opposition’s box. Left unmarked, he did untold damage! He revelled in the pressure of leading the line for a big team like Pirates and was never overawed by the occasion. Fourteen years after his death, the PSL and, by extension, Bafana Bafana, are still missing goalscorers like Manyathela. No one is irreplaceable, so they say… well, not ‘Slow Poison’.

May his soul rest in peace.

Downs Target Attracts Huge Interest

Mamelodi Sundowns’ transfer target from Zambia has attracted interest from other clubs from around the continent.

Read: Zambian Young Star At Sundowns

Downs are interested in Zambian striker Lameck Banda, with the Chloorkop club inviting him for training under Pitso Mosimane and his technical team.

However, the Chloorkop outfit is facing strong competition for the young star from clubs in Zambia and outside of South Africa.

The 16-year-old is currently on the books of Nkwazi FC in the Zambian Premier League. He has been impressive for both Nkwazi and his country’s U17 national team.

Zambia Police Director of Sport Adrian Kashala, whose office is involved with the running of the club, confirmed the player’s visit to South Africa.

“When I enquired and what I know is that the boy has been under pressure here. There have been a lot of people coming to deceive him and telling him this and that. At some point, the player was even running away from home because there were a lot of uninvited guests for him from different clubs here (Zambia) and outside. Also, there have been a lot of unscrupulous agents here and there and so forth.

“There were a lot of people putting the boy under a lot of pressure and at some point, he even stopped coming to training because they were looking for him from place to place. His agent decided to take him to South Africa for just that break he needed. For me, that is where the story ends. If he was training anywhere, it was for the sake of keeping fit or so. Yesterday, when I enquired, I was told that he was training with Sundowns. We expect him back at the club during the course of the week. The boy is still very young and we don’t want to rush him. It’s his first season in the (Zambian) Premier League,” said Kashala.
